Established 1866: ‘The Horbury Victoria Band now consists of a Senior Band, Youth Band, Intermediate Band and Learner Section, in all numbering almost 100 members, backed by a very willing and hard working Committee. The Senior and Youth Bands are committed to maintaining high performance standards in all their contest and concert engagements and they look forward to working hard as a team for the future’.

Award-winning Band which now has its base in Stanley, near Wakefield.

‘You don't have to be religious to sing in our choir - in fact you don't even have to be from Wakefield! A number of our members regularly travel to rehearsals and performances from many other parts of West Yorkshire. They do it for the joy of performing great music and for the love of singing. If you are interested in getting involved with the choir why not drop us a line or two telling us about yourself?’

Wakefield Festival Chorus is well known in the city for its accomplished performances. We are a medium-sized mixed-voice choir, and we sing everything from large scale classical works to songs from the shows. We enjoy working with other musical groups such as school choirs and other choral societies. We always welcome new singers. The ability to sight read is useful but not essential. No audition is required.’

‘The Band has had many proud and enjoyable moments in its four decade history, and these continue to come. Since its formation in 1977 the band has performed many concerts each year including the Bands in the Parks series throughout Yorkshire, at agricultural shows, charity fund-raising events and the very popular Christmas Brass concert. The band regularly takes part in joint concerts with local choirs and also has a popular 10 piece group which is available on request.‘

‘We are a wind band based in Ossett - established in 1990. We enjoy playing all sorts of genres of music with the aim of entertaining local people.‘

‘Founded in 1953 and is now established as one of the premier choirs in the North of England. It is based in Wakefield and currently has over 100 members. The Choir usually gives five concerts a year ... In recent years the choir has appeared on BBC Radio and Television, Classic FM and has made two commercial CD recordings. There have been four foreign tours, and regular performances with top class orchestras and internationally known artists ... The choir continues to enhance its reputation and widen its repertoire to include early music, classical, jazz and contemporary music which continues to build audiences.’

Originally built by the townspeople of Wakefield in the mid 14th century as an integral part of Wakefield's new stone bridge. However, what you see today is largely a 19th Century rebuild by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. Nowadays, the Chantry Chapel is often open for exhibitions, talks, and other events - including occasional concerts and recitals - as well as for regular services.

'Wakefield has a fine tradition of musical excellence, from our magnificent Compton organ and our internationally renown choir to our set of 14 Cathedral bells.'
