‘Established in 2004, Blackdowns Early Music Projects were principally conceived to draw together groups of experienced singers to work under the expert guidance of specialist music directors on programmes of infrequently performed early music (mostly pre 1720). Singers are invited from all over Europe and the UK to spend 3 or 4 days working together on music that is usually performed in a suitable venue in or around the Blackdown Hills, bridging the Somerset / Devon borders. Frequently the music is accompanied by specialist early music instrumentalists. The resulting choral concerts have become a mainstream event in the calendar for anyone who loves renaissance or baroque vocal music.’

‘Founded in 1955 by a small group of church music enthusiasts, whose aim was to bring to the churches of Somerset part of the choral heritage of the Church of England. The choir was first known as the Rural Church Singers. They became well-known to many small country congregations to whom they travelled to sing Choral Evensong ... Our mission remains: to maintain access to the cathedral musical tradition for those whose resources or style of worship would not otherwise provide that opportunity. Most members live in the Wellington/Taunton areas. We generally sing two or three services in locations within reasonable travel distance from Taunton ... We also sing services in cathedrals up and down the land.’

Formed 1984: ‘Since its foundation, the choir has established an enviable reputation for the quality of its concerts, presenting its audience not only with impressive programmes of varied and innovative repertoire, but also attracting the highest calibre of musicians to perform in Somerset ... The choir stages two annual concerts: one at Wells Cathedral in summer and one at King’s College Chapel, Taunton in winter. The choir’s size of around 60-70 singers means it can tackle a wide range of works, from a cappella renaissance polyphony, through baroque and classical music, to large-scale 20th century works with orchestra. The choir does not hold weekly rehearsals: it meets for six weekends per year (mainly in school and university holiday periods) to prepare intensively for these concerts. This makes it possible for people who have roots in Somerset, but work or study elsewhere, to be full members of the choir’.

‘Music is a very important part of worship at our Church. Music lifts our praises to God and we enjoy a large choir, a growing number of choristers and the services of highly skilled musicians. We are superbly led by a team of organists, on the Father Willis organ and a recently restored grand piano. Our Musical Director and Director of Choristers, inspire singers to give of their very best. We sing hymns old and new and even write our own! There is a long tradition of music in the Church which we strive to uphold.’
