‘The 12 Ensemble has rapidly developed a reputation as one of the UK’s leading un-conducted string orchestras. A bold, versatile and virtuosic ensemble, the group is built around a core of twelve of London’s finest and most exciting chamber musicians. Committed to always performing without a conductor, the 12 ensemble breathes new life into the concept of the chamber orchestra. Having adopted the smallest possible formation at its heart, the ensemble creates performances that are as intimate, dedicated and dynamic as that of a string quartet but with the breathtaking sound and energy afforded by twelve brilliant string players.‘

‘Created with the aim of bringing together like-minded musicians who worked together in the past, in different orchestras and ensembles, and dreamt of playing together again and sharing their passion for music with each other and their audiences. The vision is to develop a platform where european-based musicians have the freedom and inspiration to explore music, try out their ideas and ultimately continue their never-ending development as musicians ... With an enormous focus on chamber music, Artisti con Brio can be heard not only as a string ensemble but also in different chamber music set-ups, including duos (violin and piano, or 2 violins), string trios, quartets and, recently, quintet.‘

'An amateur string orchestra for adults. Our players include music professionals and advanced amateurs. As a non-profit organisation we simply seek to cover the costs of staging our concerts. Some of our concerts raise funds for charity. Our objective is to share the enjoyment of music-making and to bring a wide range of music to our audiences. We stage three concerts per year and through this we provide an opportunity for soloists to perform with an orchestra. Often we combine with wind players, choirs and others to offer a wider range of music than the typical string repertoire.'

‘The music we play comes from all periods including Renaissance, Baroque and 20th century, and features pieces familiar to everyone who loves string music, such as Tchaikovsky's Serenade, Handel's Concerto Grossi and Britten's Simple Symphony. We have recently accompanied soloists in several concertos, including Telemann's viola concerto, Bach and Vivaldi violin concertos, and a guitar concerto of Vivaldi. Although there are no formal concerts, the Orchestra in more recent years has put on informal recitals in the church hall to show the church members and the local community the sort of things we do. They are very relaxed affairs ...’

Orchestra Pro Anima, directed by Michael Bochmann, was launched in January 2017 and is formed of musicians who have performed together over a long period as members of the English String Orchestra. So, although Orchestra Pro Anima is new in name and status as an independent body, the players have a real affinity with one another, forged over time ... This is a flexible group of musicians who are able to accommodate wind/brass players, harp, harpsichord and other instrumentalists and thereby to include a greater number of concertos in their repertoire and to perform, for example, with choirs in oratorio and other sacred works.’

‘Worcestershire based Volante Strings is a group of 12 - 14 string players who regularly give concerts at home and occasionally overseas ... We generally play chamber style without a conductor which means working very closely with each other in rehearsal in order to achieve a high standard of concert performance ... Our programmes encompass a varied and challenging range of styles, from classical, through contemporary to light and our repertoire covers music from as far back as the sixteenth century right up to the present day. It gives us much pleasure to perform arrangements by our own players and also new works written specially for the ensemble by local composers ... Our name, Volante, means “fast and light” and comes from the Italian word for flying. It is used to describe a particular style of bowing.’

Formed in 2012: 'We meet regularly throughout the year, about once a term, and rehearse in a fairly unusual way. Our first rehearsal, on Friday evening, is a play-through of the works to be covered that weekend. Our second rehearsal, on Sunday morning, is in small groups: firstly in same instrument sectionals, then in string quartets and other small ensembles. Our third rehearsal, on Sunday afternoon, is with our conductor and at the end of this session we give a short informal concert to families with children, friends and anybody who would like to come along.'

'One of WSO's greatest assets is its friendly and welcoming membership ... From the person causing mischief at the back of the second violins to the cellist who insists on always sitting at the lowliest place in the section and not forgetting the outraged violas who harrumph their light-hearted indignation when the odd viola joke is inevitably wheeled out on occasion - there are plenty of vibrant personalities united by their love of making music together.'

You don’t have to audition, we just want to encourage you to play music ... From a small beginning in September 2000, YLSS has grown to nearly fifty players with more joining each year. Each section has a range of abilities from virtual beginners upwards to experienced players. Members come from all over Yorkshire, including Halifax, Hebden Bridge, Hull, Harrogate and, of course, Leeds itself.’
