‘The 12 Ensemble has rapidly developed a reputation as one of the UK’s leading un-conducted string orchestras. A bold, versatile and virtuosic ensemble, the group is built around a core of twelve of London’s finest and most exciting chamber musicians. Committed to always performing without a conductor, the 12 ensemble breathes new life into the concept of the chamber orchestra. Having adopted the smallest possible formation at its heart, the ensemble creates performances that are as intimate, dedicated and dynamic as that of a string quartet but with the breathtaking sound and energy afforded by twelve brilliant string players.‘

'An amateur string orchestra for adults. Our players include music professionals and advanced amateurs. As a non-profit organisation we simply seek to cover the costs of staging our concerts. Some of our concerts raise funds for charity. Our objective is to share the enjoyment of music-making and to bring a wide range of music to our audiences. We stage three concerts per year and through this we provide an opportunity for soloists to perform with an orchestra. Often we combine with wind players, choirs and others to offer a wider range of music than the typical string repertoire.'

Formed in 2012: 'We meet regularly throughout the year, about once a term, and rehearse in a fairly unusual way. Our first rehearsal, on Friday evening, is a play-through of the works to be covered that weekend. Our second rehearsal, on Sunday morning, is in small groups: firstly in same instrument sectionals, then in string quartets and other small ensembles. Our third rehearsal, on Sunday afternoon, is with our conductor and at the end of this session we give a short informal concert to families with children, friends and anybody who would like to come along.'

'One of WSO's greatest assets is its friendly and welcoming membership ... From the person causing mischief at the back of the second violins to the cellist who insists on always sitting at the lowliest place in the section and not forgetting the outraged violas who harrumph their light-hearted indignation when the odd viola joke is inevitably wheeled out on occasion - there are plenty of vibrant personalities united by their love of making music together.'
