‘One of the leading non-professional orchestras in the south of England, performing a wide variety of interesting works from across the orchestral repertoire. We ... perform five concerts each year, including one concert designed specifically to introduce children to orchestral music ... Like most orchestras, we have more vacancies in some sections of the orchestra than others, but we welcome enquiries from players of all instruments ... We welcome enquiries from new volunteers who are able to offer us non-performing support so that we can get on with the business of playing the music!‘

‘Founded in 1986 by members of Southampton CND who enjoyed singing, and began giving occasional concerts ... The idea evolved to have fun and to raise money for various good causes. Our original name was Concord Singers (without the 'h'), devised ... to include the letters CND. Eventually the choir was permanently constituted ... At this time we revised our name to Conchord Singers ... We are always looking for new members in all parts. There is no audition, but an ability to follow music notation and a sense of pitch are important. Do try us out at a few rehearsals before deciding to commit.’

‘A Choir with Ambition, High Standards, Social Conscience and Where People Matter ... Our performance goes from ppp to fff: passionate, progressive and professional to formidable, fresh and friendly ... Southampton Choral Society is a prestigious choir with 130 members. We perform with professional orchestras and soloists, and we sing in various venues in the Southampton area ... We usually invite prospective members to come along to one or two rehearsals, without obligation, to see if they feel this is the right choir for them.  If you decide to join you will need to take a short voice assessment with the conductor ... Being a member of the choir is fun, but it is also challenging and exciting, and you need to be committed and able to attend rehearsals on a regular basis. We are also expected to do “homework” in preparation for rehearsals and to learn difficult passages.’

‘The combined forces of Southampton Philharmonic Choir and the SU Philharmonic Choir numbers around 185 singers, thanks to several particularly successful seasons of recruitment in the student choir! ... Membership fees are one of our main sources of income, helping to pay for the promotion of concerts and the professional players and soloists we use. Despite this, our subs are less than the fees for many adult education classes ... The Southampton Philharmonic was founded in 1860, making us Southampton's longest-established music society. We are noted for performing both from the established choral repertoire and also contemporary works.’

‘Made up of the best young jazz musicians in the Southampton area. It is recognised as one of the most successful and creative organisations of its type in the country. The band has won national awards, played at many major venues and jazz festivals ... The achievements of the Band are linked with its philosophy to promote jazz as a living, vibrant art-form to young musicians. Unlike numerous other youth jazz ensembles, the main bulk of SYJO's music focuses on “cutting-edge”, creative, contemporary British jazz and contemporary jazz composition.’

Founded 1975: ‘The Madding Crowd researches and performs the church and secular music of the English village bands and choirs in the period 1660 to 1861 ... The Puritans destroyed most organs in country churches, so after the Restoration of the Monarchy, instruments were brought in to lead the singing. Galleries were built at the west end of churches for the singers and players, who, besides leading the musical parts of the Sunday services, played for dancing at harvest-time and Christmas, led the Club Walk at Whitsun, and when invasion threatened led the militia on parade’.

‘Formed in 2003 and draws many of its members from Chandlers Ford, Eastleigh and the surrounding area ... From the start the band has been characterised by the wide variety of its members’ age, experience and background. Several of the band members were previously members of Thornden School Wind Band; some members have played continuously throughout their lives, others have started playing again relatively recently after breaks of 20 to 30 years (or more), and a few have taken up playing an instrument later in life. As a result we have a huge range of skill and experience, from professional musicians and music teachers to those playing in a band for the first time. One thing we all share is a love of playing good music in a relaxed, friendly and fun atmosphere.’
