‘Caters for all ages, abilities and instruments. We regularly receive comments that this is a really friendly and informative festival; to those of you who may be new to it, its “difference” means that after every performance, in whatever category, an adjudicator of the highest calibre will give instant comments and helpful advice. Audiences appreciate hearing these assessments immediately instead of having to wait until the end of the class, and performers really enjoy the chance to work on their pieces with an experienced adjudicator.‘ Held Late April.

‘An intensive training course for aspiring solo singers from home and abroad, who are already experienced in solo performance. The Summer School assembles a team of expert teachers with complementary skills and a passionate interest in the development of young singers. ‘Music has played a foremost role in the life of Balliol College, Oxford for the past two centuries. Benjamin Jowett, one of the most well-known Masters of the College, invited John Farmer, music master of Harrow School, to become Director of Music at Balliol; and in 1885 Farmer created a series of concerts on alternate Sunday evenings, which are still held today in an almost unchanged fashion. ‘Whilst ranging from the timeless delights of Tallis and Byrd to the power and drama of Howells and Britten, the focal point of Festival is the early twentieth century — the Golden Renaissance of English music. As well as commissioning thrilling but accessible new works in the English tradition, the EMF is devoted to keeping important works by major British composers in the repertoire, and to resurrecting the many forgotten gems by a host of lesser-known composers, whose exquisitely crafted works never fail to surprise and enchant ... ’The Fo'c'sle currently has a number of different formats for the evening, the two staple ones being guest nights and singarounds. On a guest night, we start with typically four local performers - the MC and a few “floor singers” (when folk clubs first came into being, they sang from the floor but the guest sang from the stage).  The floor singers are sometimes organised in advance, but more often the MC chooses whoever is available on the night.  Then the guest does two 45-minute sets, with a break in the middle for the usual reasons and for the raffle. In a singaround, we work round the room and everyone who wants to can give us a song or whatever (a tune, a poem, a story).  There's a break, usually a bit earlier than on a guest night.’

‘A small folk club with a friendly, informal atmosphere ... We mostly book performers of British traditional music, but we enjoy other styles as well. We like any member of the audience who wants to sing or play to have a turn, so have a couple of songs or tunes ready if you'd enjoy performing (but don't feel you've got to if you don't want to).  Every so often we book musicians to hold an instrument workshop in the day and give an evening performance in the club.’

Initially it was simply a record recital group with occasional jazz film shows (cine film – this was just before the video age!). Meetings were held in the back room of Marlow’s Clayton Arms. Live events began tentatively in 1975, but the tiny room proved too small for the growing interest and the first of many moves was made. ‘An association of composers who live or work in the Sussex area. It was the idea of two composers, Peter Copley and Paul Gregory, who with the support of about 20 other composers founded NMB in 1993. The main purpose was, and remains, to put on concerts of members’ works and to promote an interest in new music in the region ... We usually present four or five concerts a year ... Our membership is diverse, especially in the nature of the music we write, and includes professional and amateur composers of all ages. Indeed, membership is open to any composer in the Sussex area whatever their experience and irrespective of gender, race, age or musical style. Our diversity of membership means that less experienced composers can be supported and helped by those who are more advanced in their careers, whether through formal lessons or informal discussion.’

‘The Association concentrates on the area administered by West Berkshire Council from Tilehurst in the east to Hungerford and Lambourn in the west. Within this area there are some fine examples of the organ builder's craft, and although the Association is centred on Newbury, visits are made and events organised in the surrounding towns and villages. People join the Association for a variety of reasons. Some are expert players who desire to share their knowledge and experience with others and welcome the opportunity to give lunchtime and evening recitals. Others are amateurs or beginners who want to learn more. Others still are non-players but nevertheless fascinated by the organ in all its shapes and forms, the music written for it, and the venues at which organs are found, whilst some enjoy the social side where the talk is musical and the discussion lively.’
