‘A unique series of eclectic Sunday afternoon acoustic music concerts ... The musicians featured in the concerts are not using electric instruments, but are using the natural sounds of their instruments and voices. The performers chosen reflect our own liking for traditional music (and more recent music composed in a similar style). Depending upon the act we may use amplification to ensure that they can be heard thoughout the concert hall, but volumes are kept as low as possible.’

‘All known cultures have music, and all cultures expect their members to be able to make sense of their music by making music or listening to it. In the CMS we explore musicality as a fundamental human capacity. We investigate the full range of musical behaviour from private listening to interacting with others, whether in expert performance or just having fun. Music is not just sound: it is dynamic pattern in embodied minds, movement, and social interactions; it is shaped by biology and culture. In the CMS we study music from all these perspectives; we aims to identify its relationships with other domains of human life, particularly speech and language.’

As much as this view is still appreciated and respected, there is a whole world of difference in the modern day instruments. The sounds that today’s artistes produce are amazing. Anything from a full string orchestra or brass band through to an electric guitar or violin, every type of instrument and style is acheived by these multi-talented musicians. 'It was in 1987 that David and Linda Holmes founded a series of chamber concerts; these began at the Walpole Old Chapel, moving in 1991 to Cratfield. The creation and registration of a charitable trust, Blyth Valley Chamber Music, followed in 1993. By then the format of six fortnightly Sunday afternoon concerts was firmly established, though with some occasional winter extra concerts ... We aim in each season to combine well-known combinations of instruments for which there is an abundant repertoire – like the string quartet and piano trio – with less usual groups of instruments whose repertoire may therefore be smaller, but no less worth hearing. We also intend to offer in each concert enough of what could be called the "core" repertoire to give us a good chance of filling the church – ticket sales being our largest source of income – but to spice this with new or less well-known works.'

This exciting project aims to provides ensemble music making opportunities to young people in Norfolk. We offer a monthly Training Orchestra, a monthly Youth Orchestra, and a weekly Youth Choir ... In 2014, partly due to reductions in government funding of local music education, the landscape of available musical ensembles for students working at an intermediate level, changed. Although great opportunities to access intermediate ensembles subsidised by government still exist, the changes were substantial. This in turn meant that one particular model of operating ceased to be accessible - namely, the provision of a youth orchestra which meets monthly ... The Orchestrate! We don't “teach” ukulele, but you will find that playing regularly with a group will bring your playing on much quicker than you expect ... If you are looking for a musical group to play at your fete, garden party or village hall, please get in touch - we do “play out”. For some reason, beer festivals seem a particular favourite amoung our members! In general we only do so fairly locally to North Beds, but may go further afield if the gig appeals to the members - just ask. If we can’t help. we may be able to recommend another ukulele group.’

Not only had she many friends and acquaintances of renown in the chamber music world who were willing to come to play, but she had a talent for discovering young artists of great musical ability whose fees were still within the Club’s means. As far as possible, this is a practice the Club has aimed to continue ... Each year we arrange a series of six chamber music recitals which take place between October and May ... We have been able to engage high quality professional artists, many with international reputations, because of the financial support the Club has received from a number of external organisations, to whom we are extremely grateful.'

Then concerts over the summer and in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Originally BasOp’s shows were exclusively selected from Gilbert and Sullivan’s Savoy operas, but these days a good number of musicals are produced too.’
