‘It all started in 1957 when the old Herefordshire Constabulary celebrated its centenary and a dozen officers made up a choir to sing at an anniversary event in Hereford Cathedral. They enjoyed it so much they kept on singing and eventually opened their ranks to men from all walks of life. The Friends of Dore Abbey ... was formed in 1993 after this fine Grade 1 Listed Building was threatened with closure ... The building has wonderful acoustics and The Friends have established concert and choral events during the warmer months of the year. Artists such as Emma Kirkby, Tasmin Little, John Lill, Jennifer Pike and John Williams have given recitals ... [However] ‘The future of Dore Abbey is under review [November 2017]. There are options ranging from “do nothing” and letting it slowly close as the running costs become unbearable, to re-inventing the Abbey as a central part of our community with an educational dimension and a place people will want to visit.’
