'Founded in November 1999 by a group led by ADeC (Arts Development in East Cambridgeshire), with the aim of becoming a beacon of excellence as East Cambridgeshire’s own community orchestra. Since then it has become one of the region’s best respected orchestras. Today, Ely Sinfonia is made up of players of all ages and from a wide range of backgrounds, including school and college students, business professionals, retired people and local music teachers. Its repertoire ranges from mainstream works to the contemporary, including special commissions.'

Since the days of King Canute (c. 1000) music has played an important role in the on-going life of the Cathedral. The Cathedral has 4 choirs directed by musicians of great distinction: Boy Choristers; Girl Choristers; The Ely Imps; Ely Cathedral Octagon Singers ... Concerts, performed by one, some or all of its choirs are a regular feature and its choir(s) are sometimes joined by famous conductors, singers or orchestras ... The Cathedral Organ is regarded as one of the largest and finest instruments of its kind in the South East of England. Organ recitals are a regular feature in the Cathedral diary.'
