'Cooperative of composers based in East Anglia, reaching out to London and the south of England. We consist of composers of all ages – from students to professionals – and our aim is to build opportunities for all our members to fulfil their potential through training workshops, sharing skills, advice and support and providing a range of performance opportunities. As with most composer collectives, funding presents a challenge, so we strive to share what each member can offer to the group. We are always looking to expand, develop and grow our membership ...'

Established 2009: ‘To complement the repertoire of other choirs in Colchester, the choir seeks to promote and perform challenging works suitable for the smaller choir, particularly from the pre-baroque era as well as the 19th and 20th centuries. Lesser known works and works in their original language are given special attention‘.

Colchester Choral Society works to uphold and strengthen the English Choral tradition by performing a variety of public concerts of the traditional large scale oratorios as well as exploring more intimate repertoire including regularly singing a cappella ... An after concert reception is held for the choir and audience following all the main concerts ... Membership of the society includes trained experienced singers as well as others with little in the way of musical education, who have a good memory, an acceptable voice and are prepared to work hard. There is a short informal audition.‘

Colchester Operatic Society, COS, and its younger members (who form Colchester Operatic Second Edition, more popularly known as CO2) perform a selection of shows and concerts each year, at various locations throughout Colchester ... From our “amateur” beginnings in 1924, COS and CO2 now receive rave reviews from regional and national press and continue to enjoy a sterling reputation for being one of the region’s most loved operatic societies.‘

‘Formed by Sarah Blake in 1992 from a few members of Lexden Church Choir, augmented by a number of friends. The objective was not only to pursue quality but also engender a friendly atmosphere, with no hierarchy, so that new members would feel immediately at home. The idea has worked well and is one of the main attractions of membership. The Choir has grown steadily in both membership and reputation, and can muster up to one hundred singers when performing the larger scale works such as Verdi’s Requiem and Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius. The Society performs 4 concerts a year – April, June, November and December.’

‘We are a friendly, mixed-voice choir (SATB) who enjoy performing works from a large and varied choral repertoire including Handel's Messiah, Mozart's Mass in C minor, Mendelssohn's Elijah, Rutter's Magnificat, as well as lighter classical pieces. We usually give three concerts a year, within Manningtree and the surrounding area bordering Essex and Suffolk ... No auditions are required and we are happy to help with queries about vocal range and parts. Sight-reading ability would be helpful but this is not absolutely essential.‘

'Do you like Big Band music, but haven't got the space for a Big Band? Size isn't everything! We've trimmed our line-up down to 9 (saxophones, trumpets, trombone, piano, bass and drums), a manageable number that will still give you that Big Band sound, and won't break the bank! Like the idea of a Jazz Band, but worried that it mightn't suit all tastes? We have a varied repertoire, starting with the classics of Big Band swing, adding a pinch of Trad Jazz, a twist of your Rock n Roll favourites, a little rumba of Latin American, and those all time greats of film and stage. All served up with ballroom dancing standards ...'

‘Founded in 1977 and numbering 130 singers ... New members are very welcome – you don’t need to be a member of staff or student at the University. Our singers are from all walks of life; musical novices to experienced singers, some still at school, others working or retired ... If you would like to join us there is a simple voice test ... We sing twice yearly in prestigious venues in East Anglia such as Snape Maltings and St Edmundsbury Cathedral and on the University of Essex main campus.’

Colchester Castle Park is very lucky to contain a Victorian bandstand.  This is used through the summer by traditional silver bands and some more contemporary artists playing more modern music. There is nothing better on a sunny afternoon than packing a picnic, laying down a rug on the grass that surrounds the bandstand and then enjoying your picnic while relaxing listening to the music ... The really good news is that all of the events scheduled for the bandstand are Free.  Even more of a reason why you should make the time to come along.‘
