‘Founded in 1902 and has been running continuously ever since – even two World Wars couldn’t stop it – making it one of the oldest festivals in the country. In the early days it toured the market towns of mid-Somerset, but as it increased in size and scope it eventually settled in the beautiful city of Bath in 1952. It now runs for a full fortnight each March with classes in Creative Writing, Speech & Drama, Music and Musical Theatre. There are two free events to enjoy during the fortnight: a Speech & Drama Concert and the Classical Music Evening.’

‘Formed as a charitable society by a group of local people in 2008. The aim was to create an annual community festival which would allow us to celebrate local music and artistic talent - hence our slogan "Live 'N' Local"! Many of the acts who perform are from the nearby cities of Bristol and Bath – both renowned for their music scenes. We also stage a smaller number of nationally-renowned acts from further afield We aim to stage an event which has a broad range of music. Previous festivals have included folk, jazz, blues, rock, world, reggae, choral and classical music. We also provide singing and dancing workshops, film, and literary events as well as children's art activities.’ Held Mid September.

‘Formed in 1921 as the St James Mission Band under the conductor Tom Thorne. The band was part of St James Church in the city centre which was later destroyed in the war. By 1930 the name was changed to the Bath Spa Imperial Band when the church fell out with the band, disapproving of its involvement in contesting which was strictly against church rules ... By 1968 the band had dropped "Imperial" from its title and was known simply as the Bath Spa Band.’

‘In 2002 a group of keen singers with good sight reading skills were looking for a choir to challenge them musically, both as individuals and within a small group. Handful was founded to fill that gap in Bath. From the outset we have covered an eclectic repertoire, from early to contemporary composers, close harmony to larger scale classical works whilst at the same time giving individuals opportunities to perform as soloists or in very small numbers ... The choir is 16-20 strong, of a size that can sing eight part works. Singers will therefore be able to hold what is effectively a solo line within a complex polyphony.’
