‘Founded in 1919 under the initial name of Barnstaple YMCA Male Voice Choir. A local organist and musician was asked to form a choir in order that the YMCA could hold a charity concert to mark its re-opening after the end of World War I. It proved a great success and the singers agreed to stay together. By 1920 the links with the YMCA were no longer relevant and the Choir's name was changed to the Barnstaple Male Voice Choir and has so remained until this day.'

We aim to use an orchestra at least once a year, and at Torrington Parish Church (St Michael and All Angels) we also have the benefit of their excellent Father Willis organ dating from 1864. Every three years or so, we combine with Bude Choral Society and South Devon Choir to perform a joint concert in Barnstaple and Torbay ... Our membership includes over 140 singers and we are always pleased to welcome new members.’

‘Established in 1984 in one of the remotest parts of Devon, the Winkleigh Singers enjoy a broad repertoire from early to contemporary music ... We usually give three major concerts each year, one in Winkleigh just before Christmas and the two others usually being in Torrington (late March/early April) and Barnstaple (July). These concerts are well established and attract good audiences ... From time to time the choir has vacancies. There is no audition, but a three week trial period needs to be completed for full membership. A good standard of sight-reading and tuning, a pleasant voice with the ability to blend, and a positive attitude towards creating high quality music is required. Rehearsals are extremely enjoyable, with a social break ...’
