'Founded in 1969 by Dr. David Humphreys, a Physician in the Birmingham General Hospital where the orchestra originally rehearsed. However, following refurbishment of the General, our orchestra needed to move and we now rehearse in the Medical School of the University of Birmingham in Edgbaston.Although the orchestra has a "medical" origin and we are based within the Medical School, we welcome players from anywhere. You do not have to be "medical" or a member of the Medical School or the University to join us ... The title of the orchestra derives from the ancient Greek healer Asklepios (Ἀσκληπιός, Latin form Aesculapius) ...'

'For performing members a brief audition will be required so we may “see what you are capable of”. It is nothing to worry about, it is just our way to assess where you would best fit in the society. After all, if you join you will be performing to audiences in theatres such as The Crescent. We place members in singing voices, Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Baritone and Bass. If you don’t know where you fit into the above – don’t worry we will help you! Can you dance? Presently we have dancers who both sing and dance and have joined us from a number of dance schools and have featured in many of our major productions.'
