'We are an enthusiastic group of amateur performers dedicated primarily to performing the works of W.S. Gilbert and A.S. Sullivan ... Sir William Schwenck Gilbert and Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan collaborated on fourteen operettas in total and since its formation, the Society has proudly performed thirteen of them over the years, trying to ensure that the less popular shows get an occasional airing.'

'At the end of the First World War, a group of people in the St John's Amateur Operatic Society formed the Cleckheaton and Spenborough Amateur Operatic Society.  St John's Amateur Operatic Society was based at the Parish Church, whose President was Reverend C. S. Newell. Their premier performance was Aladdin and Out in 1918. Since then, with the exception of two World Wars, the Society has performed at least one show every year, and donated thousands of pounds to charity. Times have changed and the Society now performs more modern plays and musicals, and of course the ever popular Christmas Carol Concert.'
