The Category Ripon is a subset of Yorkshire (North)
'Born in 1994, centred around the picturesque village of Aldborough near York. It has fast established itself as one of the most prestigious classical music events in the country ... "well on its way to being one of the leading fixtures on the classical music calendar".' Held Late June.
'In normal times the six concerts in our season give the opportunity for members and ticket buyers to experience high quality live chamber music. For some people, this is a first-time experience and even seasoned concert goers enjoy hearing unfamiliar repertoire and new compositions. We not only engage experienced and acclaimed musicians but also encourage local and younger performers. Young people attend concerts at heavily discounted prices and children of school age attend free of charge.'
‘Since 1998, RIF has brought the best of international musical & theatrical art to North Yorkshire ... A world-class celebration of great orchestras, choral, chamber and folk concerts, jazz, gypsy, literary celebrities and poetry, in magnificent Ripon Cathedral, the Royal Hall – Harrogate’s “Palace of Gold”, Markenfield Hall – moated mediaeval manor, and historic village churches. Come and experience the festival’s distinctive atmosphere in an area full of history and natural beauty.’ Main Festival held throughout September.
Originally founded 1903: ‘A friendly, mixed voice choral society based in the picturesque Georgian market town of Easingwold ... A community choral society in the heart of North Yorkshire ... The choir consists of around 50 singers, comprising sopranos, altos, tenors and basses ... Two concerts per year, usually performed in early December and May the following year ... There is no audition, and guidance can be provided as to which part your voice may be best suited if you are unsure. You are very welcome to come along to a rehearsal and join in or just listen to see if you think it is for you’.
Founded in 1998 as a WI Choir ‘Norbitu’ but in 2000 ‘the choir was opened to non-WI members and the name changed to Jubilate which means “be joyful”.’ Typically sing two concerts per year in the Easingwold area.
'Started in September 2011 and is based in Pateley Bridge. We welcome players of all instruments and all ages. Some of our members have dusted instruments off after many years of hibernation, others have just begun. We have lots of fun playing together, please think about joining us ...'
‘A thriving and friendly community choir ... We are a large choir of about 150 singing members. We rehearse on a Wednesday night and we perform a varied repertoire of choral music, usually 4 times a year in Ripon Cathedral.’
'Consists of 25 plus dedicated and talented musicians although smaller groups can be provided when needed ... The Band has an extensive repertoire and is able to play many themes to suit any type of event. Examples include traditional brass band music, Jazz, Last night of the Proms, music from movies and shows, and original compositions and arrangements by local musicians ... Each year, the Ripon City Band members and supporters organise a very popular brass band entertainment contest in Ripon Cathedral as part of the Ripon Festivals programme. The contest is open to 3rd section, 4th section and unregistered bands.'
‘Widely regarded as one of the best "non-professional" orchestras in the UK ... Ripon’s renowned St Cecilia Orchestra is much more than just an orchestra. At its most spectacular it is an exceptionally fine and very large symphony orchestra, often working with top class international soloists and capable of giving high-quality performances of some of the most demanding large-scale works in the repertoire.’
‘A beautiful, ancient church with a history reaching back to the 7th Century. It is a mother church for the Diocese of Leeds and home for the cathedra (throne) of the Bishop of Leeds. The Cathedral is an active, living Church with a community of Christians who seek to make worship a priority for life and to reach out in service to the wider community ... Music is one of the crowning glories of Ripon Cathedral. The uplifting sound of the cathedral’s outstanding choirs, as well as the dramatic notes of the historic organ, can be experienced at weekly services such as Choral Evensong ... The Choir takes part in concerts, tours, broadcasts and recordings and is regarded as one of the finest in the country.'
