‘The Oldham Music Service is committed to supporting and fulfilling the musical aspirations of all young people living in the borough (in and out of school), and engaging people of all ages in a variety of exciting musical activities ... Will you become a Friend of the Oldham Music Centre? We must continue to safeguard the future of the Oldham Music Centre. In recent years many Music Services have ceased to exist. The Oldham Music Service and Music Centre, however, continue to provide the children and young people of Oldham with a centre of excellence which is nationally recognised for the quality of its work. The Families & Friends of the Oldham Music Centre exist to support that work.‘

Formed 1908: 'Our meetings still follow the basic pattem defined all those years ago, featuring regular recitals, lectures, discussions and instruction on organ and liturgical music, and all aspects of the organ, social meetings of various kinds, plus, of course, regular visits to hear and play organs of note. In recent years, the Association has received financial assistance from Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council for the promotion of a series of recitals on the fine 4 - manual Binns organ in Rochdale Town Hall, restored by J.W. Walker & Sons Ltd. in 1979. This support has enabled the Association to engage some of the top organists in the country to play for us, something which very few Associations are in a position to do’.

‘Often described as “the greatest free show on earth”, the Saddleworth & District Whit Friday Brass Band Contests take place every year on the afternoon and evening of Whit Friday ...  some twenty different contests at venues scattered around the moorland villages and towns on the western edge of the Pennines. All of the contests are open-air, many in delightful surroundings ... The contests are open to all-comers. So the local youth bands get to match their skills against the top bands of the country. For bandsmen, the dash from contest to contest makes for an exhilarating (though exhausting) evening ...This is a major event in the brass band calendar and bands travel the length of the country to participate, some even turning up from overseas.’

'A Committee of six continues to develop our policy of engaging small ensembles of strings, wind, piano, etc, playing the classical repertoire from Bach to Bartok (and occasionally beyond), varied with forays outside the mainstream: a vocal group, early instruments, brass, percussion, a folk group from the Andes, a jazz concert, a children’s workshop, etc ...'

[Now] The Band are extremely lucky to have a great club at their disposal for rehearsals, concerts, parties and even community related events. ‘Formed in 1850 and has had many ups and downs. In the early years the band led a fairly nomadic existence, wound up and reformed on several occasions. The playing standard of the band has been variable, but is now firmly established in the second section ... The band currently has a thriving youth band to secure the future of the main band.‘

‘A brass band of committed players aged between 9 and 18 years old from the Pennine village of Dobcross in Saddleworth in the north of England. Formed in 1988 with a few village children it has now grown into a thriving organisation playing 30 to 40 engagements each year comprising of fundraising, contesting, social outings and supporting charities. The Band aims to provide an environment where children and young people, irrespective of ability or background, can learn to play a brass instrument, improve their musical skills, perform successfully as a band and develop an understanding of discipline, self respect and teamwork. We have lost count of the number of players who started with the band and then moved on to other higher graded bands. Many championship band players started their life with the Dobcross Youth Band.’

'The infamous Whit Friday contest is quite literally on our doorstep and we have had notable success in all sorts of competitions over the years. We have a large concert repertoire for any occasion including: weddings, garden parties and as a marching band for processions etc. We also promote our own seasonal concerts throughout the year which are proving increasingly popular. As a sideline a group of players from the main band also perform in an all singing, all dancing bavarian outfit available to hire.'

oldhamsymphonyorchestra.org.uk

Founded 1963: ‘The orchestra rehearses weekly throughout the school year and gives concerts three times a year in Oldham, Rochdale and Manchester. The orchestra supports itself almost exclusively through membership subscriptions, a patronage scheme and ticket sales ... These sources of income are unlikely in the long run to sustain the orchestra, as each concert leads to a reduction in our reserves. We are actively seeking sponsorship, which will help us to maintain our aims and improve standards ... The orchestra performs an important function for the community by giving an opportunity for school leavers to continue musical performance into adult life and by providing a platform for young soloists’.
