‘We are a friendly group who share a love of music - mainly, but not exclusively, classical. Programmes are presented by members and, occasionally, by visiting sperakers, in an informal and entertaining way and we learn a lot from each other. Light refreshments are provided. Until recently we were the Maidstone Recorded Music Society, founded in 1965 ... Visitors are very welcome to attend any Centre programme as temporary members.’

'We have a committed approach to our singing but our primary aim is to enjoy making music together. The choir is known for its friendliness, something which is highly valued by its members ... The society welcomes new members in all voice parts - soprano alto tenor and bass. We do not hold auditions and ask only that you are enthusiastic, committed and sing in tune. Our musical season begins each September and is divided into three terms. Each term we rehearse a work or works for concert performance generally engaging professional soloists.'

‘Founded in 1998, is a group of 20 accomplished singers who perform a cappella choral works dating from the 16th Century to the present day and modern close harmony arrangements of popular music and folk songs ... The chamber choir is joined by invited singers for larger choral works and this has enabled TMS to perform the more established choral masterpieces as well as a more intimate repertoire. Although based in Maidstone, TMS has performed in many locations, including appearances in the Brandenburg Concert Series in London. Touring is an important element of activities and TMS has flown the flag for Maidstone throughout Europe.’

Formed in 1910: 'MSO is a superbly well-balanced mix of local professionals and ex-professionals, music teachers and excellent amateur players who come together regularly on a voluntary basis to produce concerts of a professional standard. This entails great commitment by the players, many of whom travel from all over Kent, and beyond, to attend MSO's weekly Thursday evening rehearsals'.

‘Award-winning wind orchestra ... one of the United Kingdom's leading wind ensembles renowned for its passion and innovation ... We welcome applications from players of approximately grade 8 standard. We are also keen to encourage emerging talent of a lesser playing standard where possible ... MWS performs between five and six concerts each season. We understand that our members have lives outside of music and it is not essential to play in every concert. Players are simply asked to commit themselves fully on a concert-by-concert basis to the rehearsals and performance.‘

‘The Old Barn Orchestra (the orchestra for Medway and Maidstone) was founded in 1927 ... Its name derives from its first meeting place, which was the music room – a converted barn - of Dr Ponder and his family at Abbey Court in Sandling  ... Since the 1990s, programmes have included Glazunov’s Saxophone Concerto, Vaughan Williams’ Tuba Concerto, the first performance in Kent of Percy Whitlock’s Organ Symphony and less conventional music from the likes of Poulenc, Krommer and Milhaud. Familiar great composers have not been neglected, but the list includes the great symphonists Franck, Balakirev and Bruckner. Since 2013 the schedule has included symphonies by Mozart, Haydn, Schumann, Brahms, Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky, as well as shorter works by Fauré, Saint-Saëns, Donizetti, Gluck, Järnefelt and Elgar.’

‘An inclusive and friendly musical group, formed to bring local people together to enjoy singing and making music. We have been going since February 2012 after an appeal to see if a choir would be popular with people from the local community. The response was amazing with a massive turn-out for the first session and after a short trial the members voted to carry on ... We now have around 120 people on our books and 60-100 people come along on a weekly basis to sing together.’
