! Macclesfield KEY

'Independent, registered charity, offering everyone in Macclesfield and surrounding community the opportunity to enjoy making music. Music is performed by groups & ensembles at all levels, providing progressive training and experience of wind band, jazz band & orchestral playing ... Our members range from 3 months to 76+ years, so it really is a genuine community.'

‘A friendly choir which retains its village roots while welcoming singers from a wide area. Giving three concerts a year in Bollington and hosting the annual “Messiah for All” in aid of local charities, and a public Singing Day, it is known for imaginative programming and high standards of performance. All this is achieved by welcoming all who wish to sing, without audition.’

'The Northern Chamber Orchestra (NCO) has come a long way since it was set up in 1967. It now presents a successful, annual series of eight concerts at the Heritage Centre in Macclesfield, which attracts top-flight soloists ... The NCO is the " orchestra in residence" at Buxton Festival, playing for its main opera productions, and now regularly gives orchestral concerts at Buxton Opera House / the Pavilion Arts Centre. The orchestra also performs across the North of England and is regularly included in Orchestras Live programmes across rural areas, including the Lake District. The members of the orchestra (approximately twenty in total) are distinguished chamber musicians who regularly appear as soloists.'

‘Our repertoire covers all the favourite choral works and we also like to perform less well-known and more modern pieces from time to time. Although we would describe ourselves as enthusiastic amateurs we take our music seriously, and for our performances we often engage top quality soloists and local professional musicians to provide orchestral accompaniment. We believe that we have earned a justified reputation for offering varied musical programmes of a consistently high standard ... We perform two major concerts each year, in Spring and Autumn, as well as a concert of Christmas music and a Summer performance of music often in a lighter and more secular vein.’

‘In 1984 the Methodist Church was being remodelled and no longer needed the Sunday School situated at the top of the hill behind the church. Led by Dr John Coope and Mrs Pat Penney, a group of keen actors and singers formed a trust and negotiated loans in order to buy the Sunday School building, renaming it Bollington Arts Centre. After a lot of fundraising and hard work, the loans were paid off and the Arts Centre is still providing a rehearsal and performance space for its regular users as well as a programme of concerts, talks, classes and exhibitions for everyone to access. It is run entirely by volunteers and is self-supporting. The auditorium has excellent acoustics and a warm intimate atmosphere where one can almost “feel at home”.’
