The policy of Kendal Jazz Club is to present high quality live jazz to as wide an audience as possible at an affordable price. To this end, it aims to support the best of local jazz musicians as well as presenting musicians with a national and international reputation. The club intends to present mainstream jazz, with forays into earlier forms, bebop, and more contemporary styles. The club provides incentives to join but all are welcome at our monthly gigs.’

‘Taking place in Kendal, this biennial Festival has been part of Westmorland's musical life since 1885 when Mary Wakefield, daughter of a Kendal Quaker banking family and a keen musician, assembled local choirs to sing and compete together. Many of the trophies to be won by entrants to the various classes date from the earliest days of the Festival.’ Held biennially Late March [2021].

‘We try to encourage members to get up and play but it’s optional and some members just come along and listen to the ones that do and then have a natter over coffee and biscuits in the interval. You can play solo or get together with other members or friends to play as a group. There are a few local bands that have formed from club members getting together on club nights.’

‘Started in 1994 as a flute band of 6 young players ... We currently have nearly 30 members with an age range of 11-70 who come from both Cumbria and North Lancashire ... The group rehearses twice a month ... giving numerous public performances a year. The number of flute players looking for the opportunity to play with others is always growing. One of our main aims is to provide challenging musical experiences for them and at the time have some fun and meet other flute players.’

‘Formed in 1969 when a group of friends met together informally in one another’s homes to sing madrigals, and some early and 20th century music. It now numbers approximately thirty singers and, although Kendal-based, draws its membership from a wide area. Known particularly for their performances of music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, the Singers have a commitment to contemporary music, frequently including in their programmes works by local composers.’

‘Gave its first concert in 1945. The membership is made up of over 60 dedicated amateur musicians who rehearse weekly in Kendal from September to May and give three public concerts a year. In its performances of large-scale works, professional musicians augment the orchestra. It presents the full range of the established symphony concert repertoire, and also newer, lesser-known works of the 20th and the 21st century. It actively supports and encourages young musicians embarking on a professional career.’

'An orchestra of about 50 young people from the South Lakeland area ... If you would like to come and watch a rehearsal we sometimes arrange open rehearsals or you could come along another evening by arrangement ... You will probably know quite a few of the players from school. All are aged between 12-18. You will recognise some of the adults who teach instruments in the schools ... We play new pieces that have been especially composed for the orchestra, music from classical composers, and also older music going back a few hundred years.'
