‘Musicon is first and foremost a professional concert series for both the University and the City of Durham as a whole. Our aim is to bring world-leading performers to the North-East, and to offer our audience the chance to experience something unique in the region. At the same time, Musicon is linked to the work carried out in our Music Department. It is often our connections with musicians all over the world that allows us to bring performers of such a high caliber to the city. As a result of this, we are proud to be able to present a programme that is both rich and varied, exploring Western music from the middle ages all the way up to our own time, as well as from a wide range of other cultures around the world.’

‘A mixed voice choir with around 150 members. We sing two major concerts a year in the prestigious setting of Durham Cathedral. Our concerts have full orchestral accompaniment, and professional soloists are brought in as required ... The repertoire of the Society is varied, including traditional choral music such as Bach's B Minor Mass and Mozart's Requiem and works by more modern composers such as Peter Maxwell Davis. We have also performed specially commissioned works by new composers such as Durham born Will Todd, and more recently Will Lang. We're not afraid of a challenge, as shown by our performances of works like Vaughan William's Sea Symphony and Beethoven's Ninth.’

‘A community choir that prides itself in drawing members from all backgrounds and walks of life. In common we have an interest in singing and performing songs from  many different times, communites and traditions. We have performed gospel, doo-wop, Georgian, Balkan, contemporary English, local folk and African music. Members of the choir may have had some or no previous experience but they all enjoy the tremendous feeling that comes from singing with others in an atmosphere that is warm, friendly and fun. From time to time, we perform concerts around the area, both indoors and out.’

‘We have a roster of around 80 high calibre musicians drawn from across the north east of England and invite them to take part in forthcoming concerts. Because most of our members make their living from music, the orchestra varies from one concert to another depending on who is available ... We hire professional conductors, soloists and leaders, many of whom have established international reputations ... Rehearsals take place the week before a concert - usually three rehearsals in one week. Members give their time freely in return for the opportunity to play larger scale repertoire.’

'The Cathedral Choir sings eight services per week. It has twenty girl and twenty boy Choristers and twelve men, continuing a centuries-old English tradition — indeed the choir can trace its roots back through many centuries. Concerts, recordings and broadcasts have broadened its reputation far afield, but its raison d'être remains the daily singing of choral services here in the Cathedral' ... The Main Organ 'Concept, design, placing, voicing and environment combine to make it one of the most triumphantly successful organs of the English-speaking world, a legend in its own lifetime'.
