Successful community music Festival south of Central London, typically including a range of locally-based choirs and bands: ‘We had record crowds, and a whole series of fantastic performances with great audiences.‘ Held Early October.
‘Located in the Crypt of St. Giles Church at the heart of Camberwell, we have been putting on jazz concerts since 1995 ... We are recognised as one of the leading jazz promoters in London and the UK and are highly respected in the jazz and arts scene with a reputation in particular for successful and diverse programming and for bringing new audiences to live jazz. We have been nominated on many occasions for a variety of jazz awards and honours and were recently awarded an honorary "Freedom of the Old Borough of Camberwell" for our work in the local community.’
'The Alleyn Singers is an adult choir which visits cathedrals and other major churches three to four times a year to lead services when the regular choir is not singing. Its members are all experienced singers.'
'Friends of Concordia are a hugely-valued body and form a vital part of the set-up of the choir. With the support of the Friends we are able to realistically plan for ambitious and exciting concerts and tours, maintaining a consistently high level of music making for all. Performing choral music is expensive with costs ranging from venue fees and music hire to soloists and accompanist fees. Initially, these costs are funded by subscriptions from choir members, but with the additional support of the Friends of Concordia scheme we are able to tackle bigger things: concerts in more sought-after venues, high-profile tours, and further work with professional soloists and orchestras.'
Founded 1944: ‘A thriving, friendly choir of about 90 which performs at least three concerts a year, including two with professional orchestras and top-class soloists ... As well as giving concerts in the Dulwich area, the choir has performed more widely both in central London and abroad ... Closer to home the choir performs in several of the beautiful churches in and around Dulwich, and enjoys a strong local following’.
Founded 1950. Typically three concerts per annum: winter, spring and summer.
‘An adult choir which rehearses every term-time ... at James Allen's Girls School in East Dulwich. It started as a group of parents to support the school choirs - especially by adding tenors and basses. Now it exists as a separate choir of around 70 singers, including all voices (SATB), made up of parents, ex-parents, friends and people who live in the area. Anyone who enjoys singing! It is a very friendly group and welcomes all singers as a Community Choir. Although there are no auditions, we do expect people to be able to sing in tune. Reading music is a big help but not absolutely necessary.’
‘A South London Concert Band based in Herne Hill. LWO performs a varied programme of music for the community both formally and informally. Our concert programmes have included music by Gustav Holst, Percy Grainger, Philip Sparke, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Malcolm Arnold and Samuel-Coleridge-Taylor alongside newly written pieces by London based composers. We also enjoy performing a variety of British light music by composers such as Robert Farnon, Eric Coates and Frederick Curzon. Our performances take place on bandstands around London, including Clapham Common, St James’s Park and Battersea Park, at local festivals and at our own formal concerts.’
'From car parks to schools and festivals, we create amazing live classical experiences performed by incredible musicians. We started back in 2011 when our partners Bold Tendancies welcomed us into their amazing disused car park space to perform Stravinsky's monumental Rite of Spring. We had such a great time (as did our audience!) that we've been going back ever since - performing every year as part of the Bold Tendencies summer season. We also tour the whole Orchestra around schools to play in school halls and playgrounds. And hundreds of school students come and perform with us as choirs and instrumentalists ...'
‘A fun, independent and enthusiastic community choir from East Dulwich in South East London ... Our members are all amateur singers from the surrounding area and come from many different walks of life; from Nurses to Photo Journalists, Barristers to Trade Union Officials. Formed in 2008, Note-Orious have gone from strength to strength with a current membership of 50 people. The entire choir’s repertoire is selected from song suggestions made by the members.’
'Formed in 2008, Opal Flutes is a friendly South London flute choir based in East Dulwich. We welcome flautists of all ages and abilities - come along and meet other flautists, make new friends, try an alto or a bass flute, improve your sight-reading and of course get plenty of regular playing!'
'England's first public art gallery, the Dulwich Picture Gallery is home to masterpieces by the likes of Rembrandt, Rubens, Gainsborough and Van Dyck.' Occasional concerts and recitals ... including in Christ's Chapel Dulwich - accessible from the Cloister in the Gallery.
