'We are a friendly and thriving choir of 120 singers that enjoys singing large choral works ... Unlike some choirs, we don’t have auditions. We simply rely on our members’ ability to judge their own capabilities, which works well for us. Concerts are held in the wonderfully atmospheric Dorchester Abbey. Concert days start with rehearsals with the professional soloists and orchestra who are chosen by our Musical Director. Staging concerts is an expensive business, but the choir is well managed and on sound financial footing. This enables us to achieve the often ambitious plans that we set ourselves ...'

‘Our repertoire is drawn from a wide range of musical genres, and new songs are added each term. Since our choir started in 2009 we have learnt over 100 songs together ... Our singers, around 100 at present, come from all parts of Didcot and the surrounding villages and range in age from 16 to, well, we don’t care! We neither hold auditions nor charge subscriptions. You don’t have to be able to read music, because everything is “taught by ear”. The only “qualification” needed is a desire to sing.‘

'Playing the flute can be a solitary occupation, particularly for adults. Many adults find that their instruments are unused and musical talents forgotten after school or college, when the pressures of careers and family take hold. Our aim is to give amateur flute players, especially (though not exclusively) adults, a club at which they can meet to play music together and revitalise their skills.'

‘A mixed voice choir of around 70 singers, drawn from Wantage and surronding towns and villages. We normally perform three large-scale concerts a year. The Autumn and Easter concerts usually feature substantial choral works, often in Wantage’s beautiful parish church; the December concert may or may not be traditional Christmas fare:  in some recent years we have co-promoted with Wantage Church of England Primary School. The summer concert usually involves what some music enthusiasts regard as “lighter” repertoire (although we are not prepared to let our musical standards slip). As well as performing as a distinct ensemble, we have often cooperated with other local choral and orchestral groups to perform some of the works for which we simply do not have the voice-power to perform on our own.’

www.wantageband.org

‘The Wantage Silver Band is an amateur brass band organisation, based in the small market town of Wantage, Oxfordshire. The organisation currently comprises 8 bands, possibly making Wantage the largest brass organisation in the country ... We provide entertainment to local audiences through concerts and open-air events such as summer fetes, and compete in county and national/area competitions ... Three of Wantage Silver Band's sections are active on the contesting scene, competing in the London and Southern Counties region ... Occasionally we travel further afield for contests of particular interest, or for holidays combined with scheduled concert performances ... The organisation is very active in providing musical training to the young population of the area (and to adult beginners too!), offering a worthwhile pastime, sometimes leading to a lifetime involvement with music.’
