! Crawley KEY

'Has members from Horsham, Crawley, Burgess Hill, and many of the villages in this area of Sussex. We welcome all those with an interest in the organ, its construction and music, whether or not they play the instrument themselves.'

* Crawley and Horsham District Organists' Association

‘We pride ourselves on being a friendly Club and make visitors and new members feel welcome.  Formed in 1989 the Club continues to flourish at a time when many are facing difficulty with an ageing membership.  While not exempt from this a publicity drive is proving successful in retaining membership numbers ... Our members do not all live locally, some find it worthwhile to travel 20 miles or more to attend our concerts. These, featuring national and international artistes, are held on the last Friday of each month except December when it is brought forward by a week or two. In addition to the monthly concerts an opportunity is given for members and visitors to play, or just listen, in an informal environment.’

'The Festival movement was established in the 1870s at a time of major educational development and by 1904 no fewer than 60 festivals had been formed. A Federation of Festivals was established in 1920, which has since developed into the British and International Federation of Festivals with over 300 affiliations in the UK alone ... In November 1966 it was decided in that a Competitive Music and Arts Festival should be held in East Grinstead. The inaugural Festival took place in June and July 1968 and incorporated Piano, Choral, Instrumental, Drama and Dancing ...' Held Early April (Singing).

* East Grinstead Music & Arts Festival

‘This very friendly non-contesting village band is close to Crawley in West Sussex ... playing a wide variety of music to suit all occasions. Functions include local fayres, flower shows, bandstands, churches and other community venues ... Players come from all walks of life, with some having formal musical training, while others are more self taught. All ages and abilities are encouraged to come along and meet us.‘

Forthcoming Concerts and Recitals

‘We are a ladies choir made up from Crawley Down residents and from people from the surrounding area. We have been singing for 40 years having been formed originally as a WI Choir in 1969 ... We hold two concerts a year ... a Christmas Concert in December and a Summer Concert usually in June. We also sing out to local groups, often in residential homes ... We have a very strong membership averaging about 30 ladies but we are always happy to enroll new singers, both sopranos and altos. The ability to read music is a great help but you should not be discouraged if you can't - if your voice is right, we will give you all the help we can.‘

+ Crawley Down Ladies Choir

'A concert band is a wind band made up of flutes, piccolos, oboes, clarinets (including bass), saxophones (alto, tenor and baritone), bassoons, French horns, trumpets and cornets, trombones (tenor and bass), euphoniums, basses, drums and percussion. CMCB uses a wide range of percussion, including timpani and tubular bells ... The Band plays an exciting range of music from rock to jazz, classical to military and dance to show music. With a music library of about 300 pieces, there is something for every occasion. The band has also had four works of music specifically written for them ...'

‘This Band was founded in 1974 from the original Town Band ... We also play under the banner of the Bluebell Railway Band, performing at Horsted Keynes and Sheffield Park Railway Stations including various special events such as the Seaside and Steam Weekends and the annual Carol Service ... There is no formal audition, but prospective players are required to be able to play to a reasonable standard (roughly Grade 5 or above) and make a regular commitment to the Band's concerts and events.‘

Forthcoming Concerts and Recitals

‘A friendly, welcoming choir ... Our members are just ordinary people from a wide range of backgrounds, of varying ages, shapes and sizes, who share a common love of music. Some are very experienced, and some are fairly new to choral singing. Not all members can read music – it is not essential but it is very useful to know at least the basics ... Anyone who is interested in joining us is welcome to come and ‘try us out’ for free for four rehearsals, before deciding whether to apply to become a member.‘

+ Phoenix Choir of Crawley
Forthcoming Concerts and Recitals

'An all-female choir based in Crawley, West Sussex. With a repertoire mostly consisting of pop songs and songs from the musicals, we are different from any other choir in the area. If you like to sing and enjoy the social side of making music with like-minded people, why not join us? ...'

+ Songbirds Choir [Crawley]
Forthcoming Concerts and Recitals
