! Chippenham KEY

'A quality programme of music and the arts for this ten-day Festival, a programme which encompasses music and art of all genres. "Something for everyone", as the expression goes ... It is very much a local Festival, and performers and artists are drawn from the town and region only.’ Held Early October.

* Calne Music & Arts Festival

'A unique and distinctive event of national importance. It features the very best in English traditional music and dance with an emphasis on participation and education. Run entirely by volunteers, it has minimal and very local sponsorship; it is fiercely independent and entirely in control of its artistic programme ... It is a "200+ events, make up your own festival in a variety of venues in a small, welcoming, market town" festival. Just like English traditional music and dance it is modest, unassuming, inclusive, fun and ultimately rewarding.' Held Spring Bank Holiday Weekend.

* Chippenham Folk Festival
Forthcoming Concerts and Recitals

'Offers a unique music experience: a Sunday afternoon listening to professional musicians perform in the intimate setting of Marden House, with its widely-acclaimed acoustic, followed by tea and an opportunity to meet the performers.'

‘A warm welcome awaits all singers at Calne Choral Society. We are a friendly bunch! We work towards three performances a year ... Whatever your experience and skill level, we are always looking for new singers for all voice parts, soprano, alto, tenor and bass. There is no audition, unless you need help finding a voice part. Each voice part has a rep who will welcome you, introduce you to the music director ... and can even pair you up with someone experienced who can offer assistance throughout rehearsals. Music will be provided and all we ask is that you hand it back at each rehearsal until you decide to join us as a member. You can stay for three rehearsals before you decide to join.’

+ Calne Choral Society

Formed 1940: ‘The Choir is open to any male singer with reasonable ability, and currently has a membership of around 45 - attracted from all parts of the Wiltshire county, and beyond. The Choir gives regular concerts in and around the Chippenham area - around 15 each year - helping to raise several thousands of pounds for local organisations ... Rehearsals and concerts emphasize the enjoyment of singing - with a wide appeal to all ages and musical tastes. There is good humour and friendship among the members and wives’.

+ Chippenham Male Voice Choir

‘A windband with woodwind and brass sections ... We play marches, big band, theme tunes & classical ... We play at Village Fêtes, Town Band Stands, Gala Dinners and some Charity events, including carols in the High Street in December. We typically do around 20 Engagements a year, plus a few Carols. Members are asked to attend as many as they can in order to ensure a full-sounding band. We usually play for two hours, with a short break in the middle. These are usually weekend afternoons or evenings, although we can be asked to play weekday evenings.‘

‘We are a traditional Brass Band based in the Cotswold town of Corsham in Wiltshire. Unlike many other musical groups the band consists solely of brass instruments ranging from the high pitched Soprano Cornet to the low pitched BBb Bass. The Band which formed over 140 years ago plays in local fetes, concerts, weddings and other private and public functions. We are also a contesting band and have recently been promoted.’

‘A talented and versatile saxophone ensemble of up to twenty members, incorporating the saxophone range from soprano to baritone. The aim was originally to give students an alternative avenue to learning/performing other than lessons and exams, but since the group started it has attracted new members of all ages. They have performed in venues all over Wiltshire and are always guaranteed to get your foot tapping with our wide range of repertoire and varied programmes of music, including classical, ragtime, swing and latin styles to name but a few.’

+ Saxophonics [Chippenham]

‘A very friendly, informal choir based in Sutton Benger, with members coming from the many villages and towns in and around Chippenham, Wiltshire. We began as a small group in 2011 but now have over 70 members whose ages range from 10 to 80+ ... We have also performed at home and abroad under the name Viva Voices, but at heart we remain The Village Singers! We usually work towards two principal concert seasons each year in Summer and Winter/Christmas ... Our programmes range from sacred and choral pieces, classical and opera to spirituals, folk, pop and show tunes. Those with established music-reading skills can perform in smaller groups so that there is always something for everybody to enjoy singing and listening to. Our ethos is to have fun!‘

+ The Village Singers

'A dynamic amateur orchestra which aims to offer its members a challenging and fun environment in which to explore a variety of music, ranging from light music and film works through to classical pieces, symphonies and concertos ... We are proud of our reputation as a welcoming and friendly orchestra. The orchestra is developing and moving forward with each concert and our range of works includes challenging pieces which aim to stretch us musically. We recommend that grade 5 is a suitable minimum standard for string players looking to join the orchestra - although players at a higher standard than this will also find themselves challenged and stretched.'

+ Wessex Concert Orchestra
Forthcoming Concerts and Recitals
