‘Caters for all ages, abilities and instruments. We regularly receive comments that this is a really friendly and informative festival; to those of you who may be new to it, its “difference” means that after every performance, in whatever category, an adjudicator of the highest calibre will give instant comments and helpful advice. Audiences appreciate hearing these assessments immediately instead of having to wait until the end of the class, and performers really enjoy the chance to work on their pieces with an experienced adjudicator.‘ Held Late April.

‘An intensive training course for aspiring solo singers from home and abroad, who are already experienced in solo performance. The Summer School assembles a team of expert teachers with complementary skills and a passionate interest in the development of young singers. The timetable is carefully organised to give exactly the same teaching time and performance opportunities to each student. The students experience an intense, but highly supportive, conservatoire atmosphere.’ Held Mid August.

‘Whilst ranging from the timeless delights of Tallis and Byrd to the power and drama of Howells and Britten, the focal point of Festival is the early twentieth century — the Golden Renaissance of English music. As well as commissioning thrilling but accessible new works in the English tradition, the EMF is devoted to keeping important works by major British composers in the repertoire, and to resurrecting the many forgotten gems by a host of lesser-known composers, whose exquisitely crafted works never fail to surprise and enchant ... Our main Festival in Oxfordshire (held Late May) is now complemented by a number of other events that we hold around the country and abroad: most notably concerts and recitals in our UK & European Concert Series, and our regular Autumn Festivals in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales.’ The whole is now presented as The Festival of English Music rather than English Music Festival.

Abingdon and District Music Society has been making music since 1946. We are a mixed voice choir and a full symphony orchestra. We are led by professional musicians ... The choir has about 70 singers. We don’t audition but ask you to just come along and see how you fit in. The orchestra has around 40 regular members with strong strings and wind sections. We bring in additional players where needed for concerts. Orchestral players are auditioned by a trial period in the orchestra.’
